The Inaugural Be Like Jeff | Live Heads Up Golf Tournament is dedicated to helping Jeff continue to inspire others while offsetting the cost of his caretaking needs. Jeff’s Story Jeff grew up in Lake Oswego, Oregon, and went on to play college football before earning a marketing degree from the University of Oregon. While at UO, he began pursuing music seriously, but that path changed when he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) — Lou Gehrig’s Disease. In 1984, he was given a devastating 3–5 year prognosis — Jeff chose not to let it define him. He went on to raise his daughter, Priya, as a single father and began writing a daily message of inspiration, now called In The Trenches , which has reached people around the world. In 2004, Lake Oswego High School football coach Steve Coury invited Jeff into the program as coach of motivation and inspiration. Over twenty two years, Jeff became an important part of a remarkably successful run that included seven state championship appearances and three state titles. The team motto, LO48, came from one of Jeff’s inspirational letters to the team. ESPN later did a 12-minute feature on him , and in 2015 Jeff was inducted into the Lake Oswego High School Sports Hall of Honor for his contributions on the field and as a coach. Now, over four decades after his diagnosis, Jeff continues to inspire others through the way he lives. But the financial burden of living with ALS is immense, and government benefits fall far short of covering his care.
